Moving Mountains

2021

In the exhibition Moving Mountains (CBK/De Fabriek Emmen, 2021), Loes Heebink presented new work created during an international residency in Leipzig, part of the Artists in Space – Push/Pull/Present program. Along with Gejan Stol and Esther Schlebos, she exhibited the results of three work periods in Leipzig, Rotterdam, and Blanca (Spain).

Heebink’s contribution was connected to her ongoing project Sky Kisses Earth, in which she explores how the energy of the earth and the cosmos intersect at the intersection of perception and imagination. The installation Prologue, specially developed for the Rundgang at the Spinnerei Leipzig, served as a poetic entry into this research: a video loop in which an Icelandic poem about the wind and an Italian poem about a lava flow merge, like a symbolic journey to the center of the earth.

In the triptych Healing, Heebink focuses on the vulnerable skin of the earth, which functions as a metaphor for both degradation and recovery. The poetic video works, stemming from previous work periods in Iceland (NES) and Leipzig (LIA), unfold a ritual of healing and hope. The video diptych Involution, featuring images of auroras and starling flocks, also embodies themes of cooperation, interdependence, and connectedness in a choreography of natural forces.

The photo diptych Epilogue concludes with ominous Icelandic skies reminiscent of the smoke plumes of the Lippendorf power plant near Leipzig—an image where romance and industrial intervention intertwine. Thus, Moving Mountains unfolds as a layered journey through landscapes in which nature, poetry, and human presence are inextricably linked.
