For the Beirut edition of Platform Translation, artists explored the book as a form — at times as an autonomous final object, at other times as a means to poetically organize research and sketches, or as a platform for collaboration and correspondence.
The process of making the books was approached in diverse ways, stretching the possibilities of the medium — often beginning with a story or an archive. The relationship between words, images, movement, and distribution — essential elements of books and printed matter — was also examined within the fixed framework of the book.
‘On Books and Translation’, organized by 98weeks, aims to assemble a growing, traveling library of artists’ books, continuously expanding as it moves from place to place.
The Chilean artist Soledad Pinto invited Loes Heebink for a collaborative project. Over the course of six months, they worked online on the loose-leaf publication Collections of Disappearances — a search for the invisible, for that which appears only as a fleeting glimmer.
During a subsequent work period in Beirut, all the sheets were gathered into a cassette (edition of 5), in which sound, photography, video, and paper made the instability of the moment tangible.
